Washington, DC – On Thursday, January 27, from 10 to 11:30 am, the Board will continue its systems speaker series with its sixth session, which will focus on the federal IT acquisition process and its implications for Social Security’s IT modernization and cybersecurity efforts.

For Social Security to modernize its legacy systems, improve customer experience, and stay abreast of cybersecurity threats, the agency must procure the necessary IT goods and services. One way to achieve cost savings while doing so is through shared procurement. GSA’s Federal Acquisition Service (FAS) is solely dedicated to procuring goods and services for government, including Social Security. Attend this session to learn more about FAS. It is the largest IT procurement and services operation in the US government, facilitating more than $32 billion in annual government spending while realizing nearly $2 billion savings.
The current FAS lead for IT, Laura Stanton, will describe government IT spending and the GSA acquisition services available to federal agencies, including Social Security, to reduce risk, achieve better pricing, and speed acquisition time. Stanton’s predecessor, Bill Zielinski, Social Security’s CIO and Deputy Commissioner of Systems from 2013 and 2015 and now CIO for the City of Dallas, will share Social Security’s technology purchasing posture and how the agency fits into the federal IT spending profile.
