IOM report reinforces the need for careful review of the SSI children’s program

Upcoming Social Security Advisory Board reports will highlight the need for a careful review of the Supplementary Security Income (SSI) program for children. A recent article in the Journal of the American Medical Association “Children with Mental Disorders who Receive Disability Benefits-A Report from the IOM” provides detail on the number of children with mental and behavioral diagnoses who currently receive SSI and summarizes the main conclusions of an Institute of Medicine study published earlier this year.
